WILLIAM A. MILLS, OF PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK.
GAS STOVE OR RANGE.
Application filed February 8, 1908.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Jan. 19, 1909.
Serial No. 414,927.
To all whom it may concern:
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation Be it known that I, WVILLIAM A. MlLLS, a in perspective showing the device of my incitizen of the United States, residing at Port Chester, in the county of W'estchester and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Gas Stoves or Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means associated with the oven bottom of a gas range for the two-fold purpose of lighting the burners and being able to see that they are lighted. Heretofore this object has been accomplished in various ways, in one of which the entire oven bottom has been raised at its forward end upon a support at its back end; the raising .being accomplished by a suitable manually actuated rod and cam device. In this instance it is quite impossible to have anything resting upon the oven bottom, otherwise the same would slide or the contents of the receptacle would spill. Another means for accomplishing this object consisted of two slidable plates located above the level of the oven bottom with raised curved ways in which the plates were slidable. Of course these slidable plates and raised curved ways being above the level of the oven bot-tom reduced the available area very materially beside adding to the expense of the construction and the devices that were necessary for actuating the same.
In the device of my invention, the major portion of the oven bottom rests in a horizontal position and is substantially immovable and without any obstruction above the surface thereof which would serve to prevent placing receptacles thereon with articles of food. At the forward portion of the oven bottom a part-is adapted to be raised into an inclined position without disturbing the position of the major portion of the oven bottom. This portion may extend all the way across the range between the sides at the front or it may extend only for a portion of the distance across the front and in its initial position this portion is in the same plane with the major portion of the oven bottom. It is arranged to be suitably supported and pivotallv connected. Suitable manually actuated devices are provided beneath the oven bottom at the front for raising the portion provided for that purpose and which when raised gives access to the flame conveyer for lighting the burners and also for visually viewing the same so as to determine that they are properly lighted.
vention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the gas range or oven from the back to the front showing so much thereof as is necessary for the illustration of my invention. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan at the dotted line 00, a", of Fig. 2, and Fig. f is a sectional plan illustrating a form of my invention.
The sides 2 and 4, the back 5, the oven door 6 and the broiling chamber door 7 of the gas range or oven are of usual well known character and may be of any proportions desired.
(4 represents the major fixed or un-movable portion of the oven bottom supported in any desired manner or fixed permanently in position in any desired manner. Beneath this oven bottom are burners 8 of usual character and in any desired number and arrangement, as the same forms no part of my present invention.
9 represents a flame conveyer of usual character extending forward of the burners 8 to the front of the range and having a for ward orifice coming up to a point adjacent to the plane of the oven bottom near the oven door 6.
The essential feature of my invention comprises the auxiliary or movable portion of the oven bottom This is shown in Figs. 1 2 and 3 at b and in Fig, et at c. In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 this auxiliary portion is a narrow plate immediately adjacent to the oven door 6 and which extends across the gas range between the sides 2 4L and between an edge of the oven bottom a and the front plate 10 of the gas stove or range. It is in the same plane with the oven bottom a, is sup ported at the opposite rear corners preferably by trunnions c which fit into recessed lugs upon the opposite sides 2 and a and across the front of the range beneath this auxiliary portion is a shaft (Z journaled in the sides of the range and provided at. about the center with a cam device (Z and preferably outside of the gas range or stove with a handle 61 which is adapted upon turning to raise the cam (Z and elevate the forward edge of the auxiliary portion 6 upon its trunnions 0, thus discovering the aperture to the flame conveyor 9 and opening up to view the burners beneath the major portion of the oven bottom so that in this way the burners can be lighted through the flame conveyor and they can be viewed when lighted so as to ascertain that they are all burning and there is no gas escaping, or any un-lighted perforation of the burner.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. l, I provide a plate 0 having trunnions 0 This plate is located in an aperture at the forward portion of the main oven bottom and at the center of the range with its forward edge coming adjacent to and inside of the front plate 10 of the range and instead of extending all the way across between the sides 2 and I of the range this plate occupies about one third of the distance between the respective sides 2 and t. The main oven bottom a is provided with recesses adapted to receive the trunnions and may be provided with depressed flanges coming along the narrow edges of the plate 6, or the plate 6 may rest entirely at its forward edge upon the cam device f at the end of the pivoted rod or shaft f, which is employed for raising the forward edge of the plate 0 in a manner similar to the forward edge of the plate or auxiliary portion 1) shown in Figs. 2 and 3, by means of a handle f or other convenient device.
IVhile I have shown in Figs. 2 and 3, one form of the cam device for raising the auxiliary portion Z), and in Fig. 4:, another form of cam device for raising the auxiliary portion 6, I wish it to be understood that my invention does not in any manner relate to the structure of the raising device, for any suitable form of raising device or any device capable of performing this function will accomplish the purpose desired.
lVith either the form of invention shown in Figs 1, 2 and 3, or that shown in Fig. 4:, the major portion of the fiat oven bottom is unobstructed and remains in a quiescent position so that any articles that may be desired to be put thereon will not be disturbed by the operation of lighting and viewing the burners, for the auxiliary portion 5 and the auxiliary portion 6 form such a small part of the area of the oven bottom as not to cause any inconvenience in the use of the gas range.
I am aware that it is not new to construct an oven for vapor stoves with a part well within the boundaries of the oven bottom adapted to lift so as to get at and light the burners, and that it is not new to place this rising portion on a dilferent level from the level of the oven bottom. This device restricts the available area of the oven bottom for cooking purposes and the difference in the level is a distinct drawback.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a gas range and in combination with the main oven bottom adapted to be unmovable, of an auxiliary bottom portion at the forward part of the main oven bottom let into the same and upon the same level, with the front edge thereof adjacent to the oven door and substantially in line with the front edge of the main oven bottom, means for pivotally connecting the said auxiliary portion adjacent to its back edge and means independent of the oven door for raising the same at its forward edge.
2. In a gas range and in combination with the main oven bottom adapted to be unmovable, of an auxiliary bottom portion at the forward part of the main oven bottom let into the same and upon the same level, with the front edge thereof adjacent to the oven door and substantially in line with the front edge of the main oven bottom, trunnions formed with the said auxiliary portion adjacent to its opposite back corners and recessed portions in the main oven bottom receiving said trunnions and supporting the back edge of the auxiliary member and a cam device coming beneath the forward edge of said auxiliary portion, and means independent of the oven door for manually swinging the same to raise the auxiliary portion into an inclined position for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this tth day of January 1908.
l/VILLIAM A. MILLS.
