FRED E. WHITE, 0]? GARDNER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOB TO CENTRAL OIL & GAS STOVE COMPANY, OF GARDNER, MASSACHUSETTS.
LIGHTING DEVICE FOR GAS-HEATERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 1, 1915. Serial No. 64,497.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED E. WHITE, citizen of the United States, residing at Gardner, Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lighting Devices for Gas-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is designed to provide a simple form of lighting medium for gas heaters permitting the ready and certain ignition of the gas through a conveniently located opening in the casing of the heater.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of a gas heater embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a detail showing the burner tube and deflector detached from the casing, and Figs. 4 and 5 show details.
As my invention relates wholly to the igniting means it is unnecessary to describe the structure in detail as this may be of any ordinary or improved type. The gas supply enters the casing of the stove through the pipe a, a controlling gas cook being shown at b. The burners c are carried by the pipe (Z of any ordinary construction and it is the purpose of my invention to provide a simple attachment to the usual construction which will conveniently and with certainty allow the lighting of the stove from the outside of the casing. I support on the pipe d a deflector e, and this, as shown in Fig. 3, is normally depending from the pipe by gravity out of line with the burners. The deflector is of trough form as shown in Fig. 5, having an inclined end at 7* which is supported by a plate 9, shown in Fig. 4, having an opening it, encircling the gas pipe. The plate 9 has a turned over ear or lug c which extends out through the slot is in the side wall of the heater and this supports an are shaped lifter Z, which has a recess m at its lower end. An opening n is formed in the wall of the heater to one side of the normal position of the lifter Z, and this opening is in line with the deflector when in a raised position, the inclined end of the deflector in this position taking in the opening.
It will thus be seen that the deflector e is freely supported upon the gas pipe d, carrying the burners, and when the lifter Z is raised it will move the plate 9 connected with the trough and will thereby lift the trough to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 5, and if the gas is on, by the turning of the key I), the first flow of gas will pass along the channel of the deflector to the inclined end and by presenting a lighted match at the open end ignition will follow to the whole series of burners, after which the deflector may be dropped, and it will fall by gravity to the position shown. This construction enables the use of a match to both lift the deflector and ignite the gas and in doing this the operator ignites the match and then puts the end of it in the recess m, lifting the lifter Z and thereby the deflector e to the position of the dotted lines Fig. 5, which will bring the lighted end of the match directly in line with the hole at and ignition will immediately follow.
What I claim is:
1. The combination of a stove, a gas burner within the stove, said stove having an opening in the Wall thereof adjacent said burner, an igniting device comprising a deflector, pivotal means for supporting said deflector, and a lifter connected to the deflector and adapted to elevate the same in line with the opening through which the gas may be ignited, substantially as described.
The combination with a stove and a gas burner within the stove, said stove having an opening in the wall thereof adjacent said burner, of an igniting device comprising a deflector, pivotal means for supporting the same, and a lifter for the deflector external to the stove and adapted to receive the end of a lighted match to elevate the deflector in line with the said opening, substantially as described.
8. The combination with a stove and a gas burner within the stove, said stove having an opening in the wall thereof adjacent said burner, of an igniting device comprising a deflector of trough form within the stove having an inclined end, and a lifter for said deflector external of the stove having a recessed end to receive the end of a match, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED E. WHITE.
