Abstract

1,234,366. Clip assembling tool. WARREN FASTENER CORP. 9 June, 1969 [10 June, 1968], No. 29016/69. Heading B4W. [Also in Division B3] A tool for pushing a clip C, Fig. 5, on to a stud S secured to a member M and projecting through a plate P, consequently securing the plate P to the member M, comprises a jaw 26, having a recess 44 to engage an up-turned rear edge F of the clip, pivoted to a barrel 22 having a stud engaging recess 36. The clip, Fig. 5, has a slot with edges E, which cut into the sides of the stud S when the clip is pushed on the stud. The jaw 26 has a cam surface 30 which engages a surface 32 at the end of a rod 18 extending from a piston 8 with enlarged end portions 10, 12 each having sealing rings 14. The portion 12 is larger than the portion 10; consequently when compressed air is introduced through a valve (not shown) actuated by a trigger 54, into the space between the end portions 10, 12, the piston moves backwards, air being expelled from behind the portion 12, through a port 50 controlled by a valve. When the piston is retracted a spring 42 causes the jaw 26 to pivot open. The up-turned end F of the clip C is now engaged in the recess 44, this being facilitated by a magnet 46, and the clip transferred to the stud S which is engaged in the recess 36, and this may also be facilitated by a magnet. The stud being engaged in an enlarged port L of the slot in the clip C, the trigger is pressed, switching the valve and causing compressed air to flow in through the port 50 to behind the end portion 12. The piston is thus driven forwards, the air in front of the end portion 12 escaping through a port 48. The surface 32 hence engages the cam surface 30 of the jaw 26, Fig. 2 (not shown), closing the jaw and hence forcing the edges E of the clip into the sides of the stud S.
