Abstract

1,234,027. Flashover prevention. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 13 June, 1968 [22 June, 1967], No. 28789/67. Heading H2C. A cleansing insulating liquid 17, e.g. silicone oil, flows over a vertical insulator 11 preferably from a reservoir 15 to a reservoir 20 containing a recycling pump 21. A pump motor 23 is powered from a suspended cable, as are selfcleaning oil filters 26, 27. The oil flows up a glass fibre reinforced epoxy resin tube 14 which strengthens the porcelain or polyethylene insulator 11, and down via an annular aperture 16 or rings of holes in a polythene insulator (11B), protected from blockage by a flange (32) on the metal cap 12. Alternatively, the reservoir 15 may have inner insulating walls (31) extending down a porous ceramic or polytetrafluorethylene insulator (11A), through which the oil permeates. The specific gravity of the oil differs from 1 so that rain may be extracted. A large reservoir may replenish several such insulators.
