Abstract

1,106,738. Vacuum distillation apparatus. ALLIED CHEMICALS CORPORATION. 8 July, 1966 [19 July, 1965], No. 30871/66. Heading B1B: In a distillation apparatus comprising a fractionation column 1, condenser 3 and distillate-receiver 18, maintained under vacuum by a conduit 10 which leads to a steam jet, a chamber 8 is connected between the steam, jet and the upper part of the condenser, and the base of chamber 8 is joined by a barometric tube 11 to a reservoir 12 containing an inert liquid which has a low vapour pressure and has a lower density than, and is immiscible with, water. Suitable inert liquids are dodecylbenzene, mineral oils, and diphenyl. As shown, chamber 8 is connected' to the condenser via a mist separator 25 in vessel 6. The apparatus is suitable for the distillation of liquids which are sensitive to moisture, e.g. organic isocyanates, acid chlorides and anhydrides. In the event of a sudden failure of the steam. jet, any water entering chamber 8 from the steam jet will be deflected by baffle 9 down through tube 11 into the bottom of reservoir 12. Water accumulated in reservoir 12 will overflow through line 13 into tank 23 which is open to the atmosphere. Conversely, when overloading of condenser 3 forces hot distillate through line 20, this distillate will be deflected by baffle 9 through tube 11 into reservoir 12.
