Abstract

<PICT:0815961/III/1> The components of a reaction mixture from the cyclo-octatetraene synthesis which contains solid and liquid substances are separated by steam distillation by leading steam into a column of water at a short distance below the surface so that a steam-water zone is formed above the water and introducing the mixture into this zone so that liquid constituents are vaporized while the solids fall downwardly through the non-turbulent water below the point of entry of steam and can be sluiced out. Steam, for example at 1-10 atmospheres, is introduced by pipe 5 and annular pipe 9 provided with holes round the top and positioned just below the surface of water in a vessel 4 having a conical bottom contained in a vessel 1, the water level being fixed by overflow pipe 2. The reaction mixture is introduced from above by pipe 10. Solids fall downwardly through the non-turbulent water into vessel 1 and thence into sluice 3. Due to the freedom from turbulence the solids are not deposited on the wall and no incrustations are formed. Vapours pass by pipe 6 to condenser 7 and are separated in separator 8 into an upper organic layer containing cyclo-octatetraene drawn off into storage tank 16 and a lower aqueous layer which, since it may contain organic constituents is preferably returned to the steam distillation. Reduced pressure, e.g. 300-760 tons, may be used but atmospheric pressure is preferred.
