Farbenmdustrie Akt.-Ges.; Frankforton-Main, Germany) Sept. 17, 1934, No. 26660. [Class 46] In apparatus for separating solid or liquid matter from a heavier liquid comprising two or more chambers connected so that the heavier liquid passes through an overflow from the bottom of one chamber to above the liquid level in the next, each overflow is provided with an inclined surface such that the liquid is delivered at a low velocity over the surface of the liquid in the succeeding chamber. As shown in Fig. 1, an overflow channel is formed by walls m with an inclined distributing surface f. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement with funnel overflows c with inclined surrounds h. Such funnels may be vertically adjustable. The solid or liquid matter which separates as an upper layer in each chamber may be discharged continuously or intermittently through spouts which may be fixed or adjustable. Floats or covers e, Fig. 4, which restrict the space occupied by this upper layer and thus increase its thickness, may be provided. As shown in Fig. 7, such a cover is combined with the overflow surface of a funnel c. A sludge cage g, Fig. 4, may be provided in the first chamber.
