Abstract

569,039. Liquid seal apparatus. APPLEBY-FRODINGHAM STEEL CO., Ltd., and STEPHENSON, H. P. Dec. 16, 1940, No. 17735. [Class 55 (ii)] [Also in Group III] In apparatus for fractionating or scrubbing vapours or gases by contact with liquids, of the kind in which the vapour or gas flows up and the liquid flows down a series of stages arranged in cascade, the gas or vapour in each stage flowing over a weir and then up through a scrubbing plate immersed in the liquid, the gas weir is of great length disposed so that the gases flow over the whole area of the scrubbing plate. Vapours distilled from a still 1 flow to a condenser through a series of fractionating compartments 3 through which the reflux flows in the reverse direction. Each compartment is provided with a perforated contact plate 14 through which the liquids and vapours flow in the same direction and which is divided centrally by a hood-shaped member 17 of inverted-channel form. One end of the plate 14 and the member 13 abut against an inclined baffle 21, while the other end of the plate contacts with a vertical weir 22 which extends below the floor 25 and forms with a dividing wall 16 a passage through which the liquid flows to the next compartment beneath the corresponding plate 14. The path of the vapours is thus over the baffle 21 and then downwardly between the baffle 21 and wall 16 to an aperture 20 in the wall in alignment with the hood 17 through and down which the vapours flow to emerge through the perforated plate 14. The path of the liquid is upwardly through the plate 14, over the weir 18 and down between the partition 16 and the weir to below the next plate. The compartments may be arranged zig-zag fashion as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, alternate runs being staggered.
