Abstract

<PICT:0905183/III/1> Liquids are degassed by atomizing them into an evacuated chamber from which they descend, through a subjacent vessel, under gravity over a series of flow surfaces. As shown in Fig. 1, the liquid, e.g. oil, atomized in atomizer 10, is prevented from entering vacuum line 8 by a disc deflector 15, from whence it falls through aperture 5 on to the distributing plates 16 and 17. The degassed oil, collected at the bottom of column 1, is removed by pump 20. The system of plates 16, 17 can be made rotatable around the axis of duct 9 in order to facilitate the movement of the liquid on the plate. The pressure maintained in column 1 is some tenths of a millimetre of mercury. The invention is particularly applicable to degassing oil which is employed for impregnating and feeding high-tension power cables.
