Abstract

1,232,397. Soluble mould core composition. AEROPLANE & MOTOR ALUMINIUM CASTINGS Ltd. 6 Sept., 1968 [15 Sept., 1967], No. 42147/67. Heading C3N. A soluble foundry mould core comprises a mixture of a water-soluble salt and a synthetic resin. "Soluble core" means a core formed entirely or mainly of constituents which may be dissolved in water to remove the core, the water also serving to wash away any insoluble constituents. The water-soluble salt may be a granular or crystalline chloride, sulphate, or carbonate, or mixture thereof; the synthetic resin may be urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde (resol or novolak), melamine-formaldehyde, urea-furfuryl, phenol-furfuryl, or a sugar- or glucose-based resin, or mixture thereof, and includes any necessary hardening accelerator. The resin content may be 2-5% based on wt. of salt. An exemplified core comprises NaCl, phenol-furane resin, and accelerator. The filled salt-resin mixture may be filled manually or by injection or blowing into a corebox, and the resin cured, e.g. at 150-300‹ C.
