Abstract

1,261,904. Casting pistons; cores. AEROPLANE & MOTOR ALUMINIUM CASTINGS Ltd. 19 June, 1969 [20 June, 1968], No. 29542/68. Heading B3F. A method of casting a metal piston 16 having one or more struts or inserts 9 comprises initially forming said struts or inserts, supporting them by or moulding them into a liquid-soluble core or core portion 10, 12, positioning said core or core portion in a mould or die 1 and pouring or injecting molten metal into the mould so that the struts 9 become bonded to the piston 16 during the casting operation. After casting, the core parts 10 and 12 are dissolved by a solvent such as water, alcohol or dilute acid and the metal core parts 5, 6, 7 and 11 withdrawn. The soluble core portions may be made from a mixture of sodium sulphate and at least one of the sulphates of K, Li, Ba and Ca or sodium chloride; or sodium carbonate and potassium carbonate and/or barium carbonate. Alumina may also be present. Alternatively, a mixture of a water soluble salt and a synthetic resin may be used.
