An electric thermal storage heater comprises an air passage 8 formed between the storage mass 6 and heat insulation material 9 and having at its inlet or outlet a pivoted shutter 13 which when the mass 6 is heated is actuated to close the passage by a temperature responsive device 14 isolated from the airflow therethrough by a partition 40. The device 14 includes an hydraulic thermostat or a bimetallic strip (27, Fig. 3) which is connected to the shutter 13 by a resilient link (32), so that the shutter may be closed manually even when the strip (27) is in the open position. The shutter 13 is counterbalanced to a closed position. An electrically heated strip 42 may be provided adjacent the bimetallic strip (27). The front and rear faces of the mass 6 may both be provided with an air passage 8 and the passages controlled separately or collectively. A thermostat and cut-out device for the electric heating circuit may be located in the isolated chambers formed by the partitions 40, 41. The heat insulation material surrounding the mass 6 and an inner easing 5 of the heater may be covered with dimpled metal foil. An electric heating element may be placed near the inlet to the passage 8 to assist convection therethrough.
