Abstract

1,230,843. Step-by-step jacks. E. BILBERG. 28 Aug., 1968, No. 41140/68. Heading B8J. [Also in Divisions E1-E2] A support structure comprises an outer tubular support member 1 attached to legs (not shown) an inner tubular or rod like support member 3 movably mounted in the outer tubular support member and a washer shaped clamping member 8 having a hole 9 to receive the inner support member and abutting one edge 7 of a recess 6 formed in a member 5 attached to the outer tubular member, a spring 14 being provided to bear upon the clamping member at a position substantially diametrically opposite to the recess so as to cause the clamping member to take up a position at an oblique angle to the longitudinal axis of the inner support member thus clamping the inner support member and preventing it moving downward in the outer support member. In the construction shown a screw 11 passes through a hole 10 in the clamping device and through a hole 13 in a projection welded to the outer tubular member, the spring being disposed around the screw between its head and the upper surface of the clamping device. The screw is provided with a nut 15 to enable the pressure of the spring against the clamping device to be adjusted. A washer shaped manually controlled member 19 is also provided for raising and lowering the inner support member although this can be omitted; the member 19 has a hole through which the inner support member passes and one edge portion engages a recess 17 in a bracket 16 welded to the outer tubular member. The member 19 has a bent-up portion with a hole to receive a handle by which the member can be moved up and down to move the inner tubular member relative to the outer tubular member. For moving the inner tubular member downwardly the clamping device 8 must first be released manually. In a modification the member 19 is secured to a member welded to the outer tubular member 1 by means of a screw, nut and spring as described above for the device 8. A construction is also described in which a washer-like member for moving the inner support member up and down is disposed above the device 8.
