Abstract
1470511 Clamps; props A T JOHN and J H MOXHAM 2 April 1974 [2 Jan 1973 26 Feb 1973] 243/73 and 9266/73 Headings E1E and E2B A self-locking device for attachment to the top of the lower outer section of a telescopic prop to retain the upper inner section in any extended position includes an annular housing 5 with a tapered counter bore 7 accommodating a cage 19 supporting locking balls 9 which allow free upward movement of the inner section 3 (suitably a length of scaffolding tube) but which become jammed between the surface of the counterbore and the inner section 3 to prevent downward movement of the latter. The cage is connected to a pivoted lever 21 which can be depressed to lift the cage and permit lowering of the inner section 3. The housing is supported for rotation about its axis by a sleeve 11 which threadingly engages an adapter 15 secured in the top of the outer section and permits fine adjustment of the prop and release thereof from engagement with a load. The outer section of the prop is preferably of square cross-section and has sockets for receiving the ends of struts used to interconnect adjacent props. The inner section 3 may also carry an axially adjustable head member including a screw extending into the inner section and engaging the top of the latter via a nut. In an alternative embodiment, the cage is integral with cover 8 which is slidable upwards to release the balls.
