A guide for a mining tool haulage chain comprises a rail 3 having projecting members 13 providing tubular guide channels 14 for the chain, the channels having lateral openings 15 such that the chain can pass through them when slack but can not do so unintentionally when taut. The tool may be a plough 9 or a space clearing tool associated with a drum-type cutting tool. The rail is bolted to a face conveyor 1 and is located by projections engaging recesses in the conveyor. The ends of the openings 15 may diverge and the latter may be inclined to the chain. The rail may be secured to pit props instead of the conveyor.
