[Also in Division B2] A flexible laminate comprises a compressed sheet of cellular plastics material (i.e. capable of remaining in the compressed state when the compressive force is removed) of substantially skeletal structure adhered to one surface of a tear-resistant fabric constructed so that the yams at right angles to the line of an applied tearing force form a del-shaped opening which spreads the load over a larger area. Suitable fabrics, e.g. nylon or polyethylene terephthalate, may have a twill, satin, matt or basket weave or a plain weave wherein every fifth warp yarn consists of two ends woven together. The cellular material may comprise natural or synthetic rubber, polyurethane, polyvinylchloride, polyethylene, polypropylene or polystyrene; it may be inherently skeletal due to its method of preparation or may be made by removing cell membranes from non-skeletal foam. Crimped or non-crimped fibres, e.g. of polyamide, cotton, wool or rayon, may be incorporated in the cellular material, in amount 1-30 parts by weight per 100 parts cellular material, during foaming or by vibration into the formed material. The compressed cellular material may be obtained with or preferably without the use of an adhesive: its thickness may be 0À005-0À1 inch and its density 0À02- 1-05 g./cm.<SP>3</SP> Bonding may take place by use of adhesive applied to one or both layers and light pressure from plates or rollers or by heat and pressure alone. Suitable adhesives are natural rubber, polychloroprene, modified styrene-butadiene rubber and polyurethane. The surface of the cellular material may be rendered adhesive by solvent-treating or melting. Flamebonding may be used, an intermediate sheet of cellular plastics material being present to act as a hot-melt adhesive. The laminate may be impregnated with a binder and coated with a synthetic resin (see Division B2). The compressed cellular material is preferably not impregnated if its density is above 0À85 g./cm.<SP>3</SP> Preferably a layer of tear-resistant fabric is sandwiched between a layer of compresesd cellular material and a further compressed or uncompressed sheet, e.g. a cellular polyurethane material or a non-woven layer, e.g. continuous nylon filament felt (optionally needled to a staple polypropylene fibre layer). The material may be embossed.
