Abstract
122,832. Knutson, K. M. T. Jan. 28, 1918, [Convention date]. Hatches. - A sheet-iron hatch cover for ships, lighters, or any other purpose is formed with longitudinal corrugations, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, of greater width than height. The corrugations have the form obtainable by raising and reversing a central depression 4 between two ridges 3, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or alternate depressions 4, Fig. 2, where there are more than two complete corrugations in the original shape from which the new forms may be supposed to be derived, as shown shaded in Figs. 1 and 2. The corrugated plate is secured to end walls 7, Fig. 3, and the edges are fitted with channel-iron 8, Figs. 3 and 8, resting on angle-irons 14 on the coaming 9. The lower edges of the end walls may be straight, as shown, or curved. The corrugations may be strengthened or supported by longitudinal beams at the points 4, 5, Fig. 2, and also by transverse and diagonal stays. The hatch covers ma.y be hinged and the coamings fitted with felt or wood packings 16, Fig. 8.
