A device for measuring the length of a web of stretchable fabric when it is moving either forward or in the reverse direction in a tensionfree state comprises two feed rollers 4 driven through a slipping clutch 16, Fig. 3, a driven roller 1 with an associated measuring device 2 and counter 3 and two take-off rollers 9 also driven through a slipping clutch 16. Loops of fabric are maintained between the roller 1 and the feed and take-off rollers 4, 9 by counterweighted feeler rollers 5, 11 which hang in the loops and which control the two slipping clutches 16 connecting the feed and take-off rollers 4, 9 to the drive. The feeler roller 5 is mounted between the ends of two pivoted levers and the end of one lever has a roller 7 which engages either a cam 22 or a cam 23 to pivot a lever 17 about a fixed point 18 to operate the clutch 16 of the feed rollers 4. The two cams 22, 23 are bevelled in opposite directions, one being operative during forward movement of the web, the other during reverse movement of the web and they are mounted on a link 21 which slides on the pivoted lever 17 and is moved at the start of forward or reverse running by an electric hydraulic or pneumatic device to bring the appropriate cam 22 or 23 into operation. The other feeler roller 11 is connected in the same way to the clutch 16 for the take-off rollers 9.
