In web-roll changing apparatus of the type shown, as'the old web-roll 3 is moved out of contact with the endless tensioning belt 10, a guide roller 7 is driven under the control of a tension-sensing jockey roller 8, an hydraulic amplifier 25 and an infinitely variable changespeed gear' 24 via sprocket chains and a magnetic coupling 19. At the same time one or more pressure rollers 20 are urged into contact with the roller 7 by an electromagnet 21. The replacement web-roll 3<SP>1</SP> is accelerated up to speed by the endless belt 10 driven directly from the main drive 33 by belts or chains 41 and a coupling 42. When the correct speed is achieved, the coupling 42 is disengaged, a coupling 18 is engaged to drive the belt 10 from the change-speed gear 24, splicing takes place, the pressure rollers 20 are retracted from the roller 7, and the coupling 19 is disengaged. Rotating the spider 2 causes the pivoted arm 13 carrying the belt 10 to be raised by a mechanism including a crank 37 driven by a sprocket 35 on the shaft of the spider 2. Raising arm 13 actuates a switch 17 which initiates the above described web-roll changing operations.
