Abstract
1,140,401. Feeding webs. SCHWEIZERISCHE INDUSTRIE - GESELLSCHAFT. 28 Jan., 1966 [29 Jan., 1965], No. 3852/66. Heading B6B. A web splicing device for connecting the trailing and leading ends of two webs, 2a, 2b being fed successively to a machine (e.g. a packing machine 1), while maintaining predetermined spacing between centring marks, 3, on the webs, comprises a pair of rollers 13, 18, at least one 13 of which is displaceable by magnet 20 to press on the other, 18, for connecting the end (2a<SP>1</SP>) of web 2a to the leading end (2b<SP>1</SP>) of web 2b held in readiness at the mouth of the rollers. A sensing member 22a is adapted to give out a signal indicative of the passage of the trailing end of web 2a which signal causes energization of a magnet 35 to move one pin, e.g. 31, of movable pins 31-34 mounted in continuously driven disc 30, into a position where it actuates switch 37 to activate magnet 20 and thus join the webs. Disc 30 is driven synchronously with the passage of centring marks, 3, on the web 2a. A moved pin e.g. 31 first actuates switch 37 and then switch 38 to de-energize magnet 20. Return member 39 moves the pin back into an inoperative position as the disc 30 rotates, The two rollers 13 and 18 are directly connected by a driving belt 21. A table 12a, 12b may be arranged upstream of each roller 13, 18 to permit preparation of the leading end of the new web for joining, e.g. by an adhesive strip (24, Fig. 2). A tensioning device 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 may be provided. Adjustment of displaceable roller 16 changes the size of the loop in web 2a and thus adapts it to the spacing between centring marks 3. A brake 23a prevents web 2a from running backwards.
