Abstract
1,214,641. Feeding webs. VICTORY-KIDDER Ltd. 31 Jan., 1968 [31 Jan., 1967], No 4728/67. Heading B8R. A trolley 1 for receiving a web from a printing machine and transporting it to a web-processing machine comprises a spindle 14 mounted on a framework, means for coupling the spindle 14 to the web-feeding drive means of the printing machine to wind up the web, and locating means co-operating with complementary means on the printing and processing machines to position the trolley accurately with respect to both machines. In a particular mode of use described, a continuous-stationery web leaving a printing machine 26, Fig. 1, is first wound into a roll on the spindle 14, and the trolley 1 is then moved into position to supply the web to a machine 43, Fig. 7, to collate the web with other like webs with or without interleaved carbon webs. The trolley 1 comprises upper and lower tubular members 9, 3 joined by horizontal and vertical tubular members 5, 7. Side members 11 carry bearings 12 which support the spindle 14. To the ends of the members 3 are fixed plates 27 carrying supporting wheels 4. Blocks 31 are mounted on the plates 27, Figs. 2, 6, the blocks at one end of the trolley each carrying an apertured plate 36 and the blocks at the other end each carrying two spaced-apart plates 35. To locate the trolley in respect of the printing machine, the two plates 36 are slid into slots 38 in members 40 secured to the printing machine, and pneumatic plunger devices 42 are operated to move tapered pins into the apertures in the plates 36 to secure the trolley in position. Each member 40 has a finger (34, Fig. 3) for engaging the outer faces of the plates 27 to guide them so that the plates 36 enter the slots 38. The ends of the frame members 9 may abut members 46 on the printing machine frame for locating purposes. One end of the spindle 14 is formed with a bayonet-type fitting for connection to a complementary part on a shaft (32, Fig. 8) mounted on an extension of the printing machine frame and driven through a variable slip device (53, Fig. 8) by a belt-andpulley from a motor driving the web-feeding devices of the machine. A tension-detecting means is provided to control the drive so that the web tension remains substantially constant. After sufficient web has been wound on the spindle 14, the machine is stopped and the trolley is detached therefrom. To employ the wound roll with the collating machine 43, Fig. 7, the trolley is turned end for end and moved laterally into a recess 47 in the frame of the machine 43 until the plates 27 at one end abut against a machine frame member 49, Fig. 6. In this position, pneumatic cylinders 39 on the machine frame are operated to move pins 37 between the pairs of plates 35 on the blocks 31 and push the trolley along until the ends of plates 36 abut stops 45 on the frame to locate the trolley. The roll is driven for unwinding by a driven endless belt 51 engaging its surface or by the spindle 14 being driven from the machine in a similar manner to that described above in connection with the printing machine 26. Tubular posts 48, 50, Fig. 7, may be fitted on the frame members 3, 9 to permit the stacking of trolleys one on another.
