Abstract

1,228,230. Air cushion vehicles. SOC D'ETUDES ET DE DEVELOPPEMENT DES AEROGLISSEURS MARINS TERRESTRES ET AMPHIBIES. 20 Dec., 1968 [22 Dec., 1967], No. 60594/68. Heading B7K. A side wall air cushion vehicle has its cushion 8 contained at the front and rear by flexible skirts 9a, 9b enclosing chambers 6a, 6b and respectively touching and closely spaced from side walls 7a, 7b. The chambers 6a, 6b are supplied by sources 3a, 3b through ducts with orifices 11a, 11b. Smaller chambers 13a, 13b are contained by skirts 14a, 14b and independently supplied from sources 15a, 15b, and the cushion 8 is additionally supplied from sources 12a, 12b. The gap between skirt 9b and the side walls at the rear allows fluid to escape for propulsion. In another embodiment, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), there are three chambers (16a, 16b, 16c) at the front, the two outside ones spaced from the side walls to allow ram air pressure to help supply the fluid cushion (8), and two chambers (17a, 17b) at the back spaced apart to allow propulsive fluid escape. The chamber skirts may be made double-walled and inflatable to vary their rigidity. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 (not shown) the chamber is sub-divided by means of successive pairs of chambers (13a, 13b) and the resulting spaces (8a, 8b, 8c) may be supplied independently.
