Abstract

1,109,562. Air cushion vehicles. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 9 Sept., 1966 [9 June, 1965]. No. 24356/65. Heading B7K. An air cushion vehicle has a flexible skirt wall 12 composed of contiguous U-section flexible members of the form disclosed in Specification 1,043,351 arranged in two rows so that inwardly extending free panels 22 of a member 20 in one row fit over or embrace the outwardly extending free panels 25 of an opposed member 23 in the other row. The members are secured at their upper margins 46 to the underside of the body 11, which is apertured at 28 above each pair of members so that pressure air from a duct 29 is delivered to the cavity formed by the members to issue from the base as a cushion forming and containing jet stream. The pressure within the cavity forces contiguous free panels into engagement thereby providing a continuous, but deflectable, seal for the cushion. Instead of being separate, the members in each row may be formed from a continuous looped strip. An embodiment is described in which the rows of members are secured to the underside of an inflatable wall member secured to a bevelled face at the side of the body (Fig. 11, not shown).
