Abstract

1,169,888. Air-cushion vehicles. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 26 Oct., 1966 [11 Nov., 1965], No. 47963/65. Heading B7K In a sidewall air-cushion vehicle each sidewall is constructed for the formation of a cushion beneath the wall. Each side wall 19 is formed at its base with a longitudinally extending concavity 30 and a plurality of ducts 31 communicating with an auxiliary compressor 25 through a valve 33 so that, as shown in Fig. 9, a cushion of air may be formed under each side wall in addition to the main cushion 18 which is supplied from a compressor 13 through ducting 17. The side walls may be extended downwardly by flexible skirts, as of the form disclosed in Specification 1,043,351, wherein each element 227, Fig. 13, is secured to the outer periphery of the wall and drawn into the cavity by a cable 43 and held there by suction applied through ducts 40. When it is desired to extend the skirt pressure air is supplied through ducts 40 to extend the skirt as shown and form an air curtain 42. The ends of each cavity 30 may be sealed by either an air curtain, a hinged flap or a flexible skirt. The apparatus may be actuated manually or automatically by mechanism responsive to the speed of the vehicle (Fig. 19, not shown).
