Abstract
1,075,868. Air cushion vehicles. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Dec. 31, 1965 [Dec. 1, 1964], No. 48740/64. Heading B7K. An air cushion vehicle, in the embodiment described as a sidewall type, has at the rear end of the cushion space 13 between the side walls (not shown) a transverse inflatable skirt 16 formed by a strip of flexible material 17 of finite length carried on rollers 18, 20 respectively driven by motors 19, 21, the material passing through seals 27, 28 in the body and being in contact at its lateral edges with the inner faces of the side walls. An aperture 29 and periscope device 30 in the base of the vehicle enables a crew member to inspect the material for damage, the motors 19, 21 then being operated to transfer an undamaged length of material to form the loop. The loop is supplied with pressure air by a duct 24. Other arrangements of mounting and driving the material are described, with an arrangement for employing a loop as a longitudinal stability keel.
