Abstract

In an appliance for binding cable assemblies (not shown) with a strap 3, which is fed from a reel 1 secured on a rotatable shaft 2 to which frictional braking is applied to create a degree of initial tension, which may be increased to a desired value by manually rotating the shaft, and including a device (not shown) for clamping overlapped ends of the strap while tension is being maintained at the desired value, the tension is prevented from exceeding a predetermined value by an arrangement consisting of a guiding abutment 6 over which the strap passes and which is adjustably mounted on a lever arm 7 of a two-armed lever the other arm 10 of which acts on a slide block 11 against the action of a spring 16 whereby, upon increasing the strap tension by manually rotating the shaft 2, the spring force is overcome by the component of the tension force acting on the lever with the result that a pawl 14, carried by the slide block, engages a ratchet-wheel 15 on the shaft 2 to prevent further rotation thereof when the predetermined tension is reached.
