Abstract

1,069,401. Safety harness. IRVING AIR CHUTE OF GREAT BRITAIN Ltd. Nov. 29, 1962 [Aug. 29, 1962], No. 33192/62. Heading A3V. [Also in Division F2] A device for preventing extension of a safety belt comprises first and second means between which the belt passes and actuating means over which the belt passes and which at a predetermined tension in the belt causes the first and second means to grip the belt between them. As shown a safety belt 6 coming from e.g. a storage reel, passes around a rotatable roller 3 carried by arms 4 pivoted at 5 in sideplates 1 and biased by a spring 7 away from a fixed bar 2 around which the belt also passes. When a predetermined force is exerted on the portion A of the belt leading to the wearer the arms 4 pivot towards the bar 2 which engages a recess 9 in the roller 3 with the belt gripped between them. The roller 3 may be replaced by a non-rotatable knurled bar and the storage reel by a weight on an extension spring attached to the end of the belt. In a modification, Fig. 3 not shown, a spring reel (10) is mounted between the sideplates (1) with the end of the spring (11) secured to one of the arms (4) biasing the roller (3) away from the gripping position so that as the belt is withdrawn from the reel thus increasing the tension in the belt, the pull on the arm (4) is also increased, thus ensuring that the gripping means always become operative at approximatetly the same acceleration of the belt relative to the reel. In a further modification, (Fig. 4 not shown) in which the reel is mounted nearer to the bar (2) than to the roller (3) the arms (4) are pivoted to the sideplates intermediate their ends and the end of the spring (22) is attached to the free end of one of the arms (4).
