Abstract

1,097,178. Safety harness. VOLVO A.B. July 2, 1965 [July 3, 1964], No. 28076/65. Heading A3V. [Also in Division E2] A vehicle safety harness includes at least one strap which passes from a spring reel through a locking device secured to the body of the vehicle or to a seat so that the reel is isolated from pulling forces exerted on the strap. As shown, Fig. 1, a strap 10 is mounted on spring reel 8 supported by links 5 for pivotal movement about horizontal and vertical pivots 6 and 3 respectively. From the reel 8 the strap 10 passes round a bar 14 forming part of a pivotable stirrup 12 urged by a spring 15 to move the bar 14 towards a fixed bar 11. To pull out the strap for use the passenger depresses a finger hold 16 of the stirrup. When pull on the strap stops, the spring 15 turns the stirrup counter-clockwise to the Fig. 2 position in which the bar 14 contacts the bar 11, the relative strengths of the springs 9 and 15 being such that the reel is barely able to wind in the strap 10, thus exerting little pressure on the passenger. A sudden pull on the strap would exert a moment on the stirrup 12 firmly clamping the bar 14 against the bar 11. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) the locking device is operated semi-automatically by means of a spring 21 tending to retain the bar 14 at a distance from the bar 11. Pull on the strap 10 disengages a notch 20 in the spring from a projection 19 on the stirrup and the spring 15 moves the bar 14 against the bar 11 as described with reference to Fig. 1. Figs. 6 and 7 show alternative suspension of the bar 14 and Fig. 8 an embodiment in which the reel is mounted independently of the locking device. Figs. 11-13 illustrate arrangements of the reel and locking devices in vehicle.
