Abstract

[Also in Division G2] An electrophotographic plate suitable for use in lithography comprises a support, a layer of low electrical resistance formed on one surface of the support, an intermediate layer on the other surface of the support and a photo-conductive layer formed on the intermediate layer, the intermediate layer comprising a water-soluble thermosetting resin containing hydroxymethyl radicals whilst the photo-conductive layer comprises a thermosetting acrylic resin containing both hydroxyethyl and oarboxyl radicals. The support is preferably paper made from coniferous trees, whilst the low resistance layer may be a mixture of acetal resin and zinc nitrate, cationized and starch-modified urea resin and ammonium chloride or acetal resin, ammonium oxalate and vinyl benzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride. The intermediate layer may be formed from polymethylol-acrylamide, polyvinyl alcohol + melamine formaldehyde resin or N-methylol acrylamide and cationized urea resin. The photo-conductive layer may comprise ZnO, a plurality of dyestuffs, a silicone resin, a carboxy acrylic resin and a hydroxyethyl resin. The carboxyl groups in the resin of the photoconductive layer act as acid catalysts for the .resin of the intermediate layer and also form ester links with the hydroxyethyl groups, further the hydroxymethyl groups of the intermediate layer cross-link with the carboxyl groups in the photo-conductive layer.
