Abstract
1,223,823. Measuring brittleness. SOLVAY & CIE . March 24, 1969 [April 4, 1968], No.15316/69. Heading G1S. A method of measuring the brittleness of a rigid plastics material comprises subjecting a specimen E of the material to a longitudinal tensile force and determining the tensile force at which the specimen undergoes a brittle fracture when subjected to a notch forming impact in a direction at right angles to the direction of the longitudinal tensile force. The specimen is clamped between jaws 6, 7 and the tensile force is applied by rotating a crank 14 which moves the jaw 7, the magnitude of the force being measured by a dynamometer 8 and displayed on a dial 12. The impact to the specimen is provided by a pendulum 21 pivoted by a rod 18 in the arms 3, 4 of a frame 1. The pendulum has a metal mass 22 in which a metal blade 23 is adjustably mounted. A screw 33 enables an axial adjustment of the rod 18 to ensure that the blade 23 will strike the centre of the specimen. An arm 26, pivotable about the rod 18, is initially rotated to a position forming a predetermined angle with the vertical as indicated by a scale 25 co-operating with a window 28 in the arm, and locked in position. The pendulum is then raised and locked to the arm by a stirrup 29 and a push button 31 supported on the arm. On pressing the push button the pendulum is released to strike the specimen with an impact of known magnitude.
