981,226. Testing suitability of material for shaping without cutting. RASSELSTEIN A.G. March 3, 1961 [March 8, 1960], No. 7899/61. Heading G1S. To test the suitability of material for a non- cutting shaping process e.g. deep drawing, a sheet 14 of the material is placed between two dies 10, 12 and subjected to an adjustable pressure by means of a pivoted lever 16 having a slidable counter-weight 14. The amount by which the dies penetrate into the test-piece 14 is measured as a function of the applied pressure by observation on scale 23 of the displacement of a light beam from source 22 reflected by mirror 19. The latter is pivotally mounted on a bearing block 21 carried by the lower die and itself carries a knife-edge 20 in contact with the upper die. A horizontal force H the magnitude of which is indicated by the extension of spring 26 measured on scale 25, is then applied to overcome the static friction, and further penetration of the dies is measured on scale 23 as a function of the force H.
