Abstract

1,223,591. 591. Reciprocating pump. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 21, 1969 [March 22, 1968], No.14005/68. Heading F1A. [Also in Division A5] An artificial heart pump comprises a diaphragm pump 10 operated by fluid from a control system including first and second pumps 19, 20 for pumping hydraulic fluid respectively into and out of chamber 13 of the diaphragm pump and a control valve 17 submerged in the hydraulic fluid for connecting the first and second pumps 19, 20 alternately to chamber 13 to move the diaphragm to cause blood to be pumped pulsatingly from the diaphragm pump 10. As described the control valve 17 is a spool valve 48 with a two land spool 42 which reciprocates in the body 43 so that pipe 18 leading to the pump is alternately connected to one of pipes 22, 25 (from pumps 19, 20 respectively) the other of the pipes being meanwhile blocked. The spool is reciprocated by eccentric 45 through connection rod 46 and spring coupling 72. Spool valve 48 is mounted on screwed rod 68 so that it can move axially but not be rotated. When the rod 68 is rotated by means of knob 30 valve 48 moves axially and the spool may thus be adjusted to remain longer in either the pressure applying or suction applying positions (i.e. opening pipe 22 or pipe 25 respectively to pipe 18). Preferably the two pumps run continuously. The diaphragm pump Fig.4, (not shown) may be a flexible tube (14) inside a rigid tubular body (65), the non return valves (15, 16) being mounted at each end.
