C. engine comprises a main fuel valve 5 injecting fuel into a main combustion chamber defined by a cylinder and cylinder head, an auxiliary combustion chamber 8 in the cylinder head and communicating with the main combustion chamber through an injection hole aligned with a vortex flow produced during the suction stroke and an auxiliary fuel valve 10 which injects fuel into the auxiliary chamber when opened a predetermined time after the opening of the main fuel valve.
