Abstract
1,221,411. Street sweeping machines. I. J. DUNCAN and J. F. LEHEL. 12 Feb., 1968 i[12 [Nov., 1966]; No. 50812/66. Heading E1G. In a hand-propelled or (as shown) motorassisted street or sidewalk suction sweeper a rotary .brush 12 sweeps rubbish forwardly towards a downwardly-presented suction orifice bounded by a yieldable flap 14, whence it is sucked up a steep duct 15 and laterally into a filter-bag compartment alongside the mechanism compartment shown. Suction is provided by an exhauster 19 belt-driven from an engine 20 which also drives the brush 12 and the rear wheels 19. A single removable or rear-hinged cover 2, e.g. of fibreglass, has a handle 11 which may carry controls for the engine 20 and a rear wheel brake. The brake may be operated automatically on release of handle 11. The flap 14 may be slit into segments and may comprise superposed sheets having relatively staggered slits. The rear wheel height is adjusted for brush wear by a screw shaft 35a. The brush 12 is enclosed at sides and rear and is removably coupled to a belt-driven gear box (22), Fig. 3 (not shown), connected by chain gearing to the rear wheels (9) and to a gutter brush (30) rotating about an approximately vertical axis.
