Abstract

1,221,259. Punching. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. 14 June, 1968 [29 June, 1967], No. 28492/68. Heading B3W. [Also in Divisions B4, B7 and F3] A fastener driving tool for connecting a padeye 1 to the side 2 of a sunken vessel comprises a sleeve 6 adapted for connection to a flange 4 integral with or welded to the padeye, a barrel 9, shoulders 8 and 10 carried by the sleeve and barrel respectively, a shock absorbing coil 41, a stud unit 21-30, and means 32-38 for firing an explosive charge 30. The shoulder 10 is carried by a collar 11, in which a bushing 13 is received, the bushing having an integral end wall 19 and a shoulder 18 which engages a corresponding shoulder on the flange. In operation spacer 36 is removed, and pin 34 is urged into engagement with the end wall of a cap 22 to fire a primer 27. The charge with then be ignited. The force urging piston 21 towards the side 2 will cause bolt 24 to shear, and the stud 26 will be driven through the wall 19 into the side. Recoil of the barrel will straighten part 15 of the bushing and the threads joining the bolt and stud will be stripped. Prior to attaching the padeye to the side 2 by the stud, the padeye may be held in place by magnets. The charge may be fired electrically.
