Abstract

1,030,059. Breech assemblies. AMP Inc. Jan. 22, 1965 [Jan. 30, 1964], No. 2824/65. Addition to 956,227. Heading F3C. [Also in Division B4] The breech assembly of the parent Specification is modified to permit the cap 38 which closes the end of the breech member 19 to move from a first position (as shown) in which a spike 47 on the cap pierces the cartridge case and closes an aperture 36 in a wall 30 between the cartridge case 23 and the cap to a second position in which the spike 47 is withdrawn from the cartridge case and the aperture 36 to allow the explosing gases retained in the cartridge case after an explosion to escape through the aperture 36 and along the hole 48. As shown, the breech assembly is provided in a tool for driving a wedge member W into a connector C to trap electrical conductors E therebetween and so form an electrical connection. The wedge is driven into the connector C by a ram 49 the end 51 of which is received with the cartridge case 23 prior to firing and has a firing-pin 54 formed thereon to detonate percussion cap 55 provided in a plug 57 placed in front of the charge 56. After the ram has been projected to the left the cap 38 is unscrewed to release the explosive gases and to abut a pin 41 on a sleeve 29 which is unscrewed from the breech member on further rotation of the cap. A sleeve 25 surrounding the breech member can then be moved to the right so that a shoulder 26 thereon may extract the cartridge case, the sleeve being guided by lugs 27 thereon projecting into diametrically opposite grooves 20 in the breech member.
