Abstract
1,221,165. Demoisturizing leather. MASCHINENFABRIK TURNER A.G. Feb.20, 1969, No.9209/69. Heading C6C. Leather is continuously demoisturized by feeding it between a pair of endless conveyer belts 2, 3 which are constructed of permeable material having a capacity of retaining moisture at least by a surface tension effect and which are resilient at least in a direction at right angles to the belt surfaces, whereby moisture can be transferred from the leather to the belts by applying pressure to the conveyer belt - leather - conveyer belt sandwich, there being provided, in addition to such pressure-applying means, means for passing a current of air through the belts or /and for shaking the belts to remove the collected moisture either before or after separation of the belts to discharge the squeezed leather. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the leather is gripped between the belts 2, 3 and the sandwich passed successively between a first pair of plates 13 to which pressure is applied in the directions of arrows 5, so that most of the water 6 contained in the leather is squeezed out and retained in the belts 2, 3, between a pair of suction nozzles 8 to which suction is applied to withdraw the water 6 from the belts, and then between a second pair of plates 13 which are vibrated in the direction of arrows 12 to extract more water from the leather, the belts then being separated by being passed over rollers 15 and the further water being removed from the belts either by blasts of air from a conduit 17, which drive the water into collecting ducts 18, or by a shaker plate 11, which shakes the water into a trough 20, or by a combination of both these methods. In an alternative embodiment Fig. 4 (not shown). The water is caused to be transferred from the leather to the belts (2, 3) by passing the belt - leather - belt sandwich over a bar (14) which causes a sudden change in direction of the sandwich, the bar incorporating an air nozzle which drives the water from the leather. Suction nozzles thereafter remove the water from the belts. Each belt consists of a plurality of resilient rubbery or plastic fibres in the form of a mesh, Fig.2, sufficiently fine for water to be retained by a surface tension effect.
