800,355. Filters. HALSTRICK, H. Dec. 30, 1955, No. 37386/55. Class 46. An endless belt 1 has side flanges 1<SP>1</SP> which along the upper run of the belt travel on pairs of rails 3, Fig. 1, which are supported on rubber buffers 5 and are acted upon by electro-magnetic vibrators 4. Liquid passing through the belt from slurry fed to it at 8 is carried away by trough-shaped endless belts 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP> and, optionally, by a trough 12, while solids are discharged at 11. An elastically-mounted bar 9 prevents excessive upward movement of the belt 1. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the belt consists of individual filtering elements elastically interconnected and the side flanges are of rubber, the lower edges having an undulating contour (see Figs. 7 and 9). These lower edges encounter, along the upper run of the belt, rollers rotatably mounted on a supporting frame, the belt being thereby vibrated vertically. The rollers may be replaced by contoured strips. In Fig. 4 the ends of transverse ribs 15 which support the belt fabric slide between pairs of contoured guide strips 161, 16<SP>11</SP>. The belt 1 may have U-shaped transverse ribs 21, Fig. 6, to give it a trough shape, the filter bars being shown at 1a. Rollers 22 mounted on the bars 21 co-operate with contoured strips. Transverse vibrations in the plane of the belt may be produced by providing the horizontal side flanges 19<SP>1</SP>, 19<SP>11</SP> and rollers 20 of Fig. 5. In Fig. 7 the belt is transversely subdivided by permeable walls 23 covered with porous material 23<SP>1</SP>. The floors of the compartments thus formed are covered with porous foamed rubber or the like, and the compartments are closed at top and sides by the casing 25 ; the side walls of the casing in this region may be covered with permeable or contoured material. The belt 1 is driven clockwise by contoured rollers 26<SP>1</SP>, 26<SP>11</SP> and is vibrated by rollers 30 mounted on endless strips 29 driven anticlockwise (or clockwise at a rate different from that of the belt 1). Filtrate is carried away in a trough 34. Residual liquid is squeezed out of the cake by a roller 31<SP>1</SP> and the cake is removed by a transverse conveyer 33. The belt is washed by a spraying device 32 and squeezed dry by a roller 31<SP>11</SP>. In Fig. 9 the belt is driven clockwise by a drum 26<SP>111</SP> and travels around a drum 36 carrying rollers 30<SP>111</SP> and driven anticlockwise. Cakesqueezing pressure in this case is provided by the juxtaposition of casing 25<SP>111</SP> and the belt 1 on the right. A suction box in the interior of the belt chamber may be provided in the embodiments of Figs. 7 and 9, and suction and pressure may be applied thereto alternately. Several belts 1 may be in series in a casing 37, Fig. 12, having a liquid outlet 39, solids outlet 38 and an opening 42 for suction or for admission of hot air for drying. The aprons may be permeable or not and, where sloping, assist in the draining of the material. In Fig. 11 (not shown) four belts are arranged horizontally in a easing in a slightly-overlapping series arrangement. In all cases the vibrations are of the order of magnitude of at least 200 cycles per minute. All forms of the apparatus may be used for sifting or screening solid materials.
