Abstract

1,220,845. Consolidating scrap; making gears. S. TOKUSHIMA. 31 May, 1968, No. 26120/68. Headings B3A and B3H. A steel product is made from steel scrap by compressing the scrap into a bale B and hot pressing the bale to form the product. The scrap may be cleaned before compressing and the bale extruded through a tapered die C, C<SP>1</SP> which is electrically heated. The temperature of the die increases gradually towards the exit from 300‹ to between 1000‹ C. and 1200‹ C. so that the scrap is not melted during the extrusion. The extruded bar is then shaped by rolling, forging &c. Alternatively the bale is heated to 1000‹ to 1200‹ C. in a furnace C, Fig. 2 (not shown), and extruded in a heated extruder (d), before being finally shaped. The heating in the furnace is preferably high-frequency induction heating. The furnace is in a vacuum enclosure to effect degassing of the steel. The final shaping is preferably performed between dies 2, 3, which form a completely enclosed chamber so that a punch 5 can be passed through the upper die to force the heated billet 7 to flow outwards and assume the shape of the chamber. The dies shape the billet into a gear, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), which may have a shaft hole formed by the punch.
