Abstract

1,218,564. Raising liquids. DRYSDALE & CO. Ltd. March 8, 1968 [March 8, 1967], No. 10790/67. Heading F1R. In a pumping installation for liquids, e.g. for draining cargo from ships, liquid is raised from a low level source 3, Fig. 1 in stages by a high level suction pump 1. In the two-stage installation shown, the pump is first operated with a valve 5 open and a vent valve 7 closed to suck the liquid up pipe 2A into a reservoir 4. When the latter in full or nearly full the valve 5 is closed and the vent valve 7 is opened, whereafter the pump withdraws the liquid from the reservoir through pipes 2L, 2B and passes it to discharge. A valve may be provided in the pipe 2L. The pipe 2A may be replaced by a pipe 2F provided with a non-return valve 8. A three-stage installation is shown in Fig. 2 (not shown). The installation may comprise more than three stages.
