In a process for catalytically steam reforming hydrocarbons in an externally heated tube, e.g. to make synthesis gas, the catalyst bed in the tube comprises a section at the inlet end of the tube and a section at the outlet end, and the first section has a lower surface area per unit volume of tube than the second section has. The catalyst in the second section, which may comprise 5 to 80% of the volume of the total bed, is of smaller particle size, e.g. 3 to 10 mm., than the first section, which may have a particle size in the range 5 to 20 mm., and/or may be made up of particles shaped to increase their surface area, being for example, hollow rings or cylinders, or star-shaped. In an example, the catalyst comprised (by weight) 22% NiO, 1% CrO 3 , 1% CuO on alumina silica supports and in experiments, particles of both 3mm. and 5mm. sizes were uniformly mixed in the bed for comparison with beds made up according to the invention.
