Abstract
A process for activating catalysts containing nickel formate comprises bringing the catalyst to a temperature of from 11.0 to 150 DEG C. in a water-vapour free atmosphere, the temperature being at least 10 DEG C. above the boiling of water at the pressure used, thereafter introducing a once-through gas stream consisting essentially of water vapour without decrease of temperature, and reducing the nickel formate content of the catalyst at a temperature of from above 150 DEG C. to 400 DEG C. in the once-through gas stream consisting essentially of water vapour. The catalyst may be supplied on Al2O3, chalk, fine clay, silica gel, kieselguhr or sepiolite. The water-vapour free atmosphere may be N2, H2 or C1-C4 hydrocarbons.
