Abstract

In a single-stage process for the continuous catalytic cracking of liquid hydrocarbons with steam at 400 DEG to 600 DEG C., the temperature and the retention time of the feed in the reactor are controlled to give a gas product of desired calorific value, e.g. for use as town gas. The catalyst, which may be in a fluidized bed, is nickel, cobalt, or cobalt-molybdenum, and oxygen, oxygen-enriched gases or air may be delivered to the reactor. The pressure may be up to 50 atmospheres gauge, and to obtain complete cracking with low retention times, e.g. less than 1 second, the grain size of the catalyst should be from 0.1 to 2 mm., preferably 0.2 to 0.5 mm. Some cracked gas may be recycled, e.g. after being cooled and separated from condensate, and may be mixed with vaporized feed hydrocarbons for passage at 200 DEG to 500 DEG C. over a desulphurizing catalyst. The feed is preferably light gasoline (boiling range 35 DEG to 125 DEG C.), although hydrocarbons with boiling points up to 250 DEG C. may be used. Five specific examples are described.
