Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain conc. methane, by removing steam prtly from a reformed gas from an adiabatic reactor comprising only one reaction zone in the methanization of a hydrocarbon, and by feeding the rest cooled to such an extent as not to condense steam to the reactor.
CONSTITUTION: A ≥2C hydrocarbon is reformed with steam adiabatically at 350W 550°C to give a reformed gas comprising methane, H2, CO, CO2 and steam. In feeding the gas to a methanization zone, steam is partly removed to reduce the dew point of the gas, and the gas is cooled to such an extent as not to condense the remaining steam. The cooled gas is then fed to one adiabatic methanization zone to give a gas rich in methane free from the steam and CO2. The reactor may comprise only one catalyst bed, and is very simple in construction because a built-in heat exchange surface is unnecessary. The methane concentration can be increased by decrease in partial pressure of steam with decreasing feed temperature.
