Abstract
Methane-containing fuel gas with a low carbon monoxide content is generated without addition of air by reacting steam with methanol in a weight ratio of 0.5 - 1.5 at an inlet temperature of 300 - 500 DEG C in an adiabatically acting reactor at 10 - 40 bar and cooling the product gas and, if appropriate, subsequent removal of CO2. By further treatment with steam in a methanation stage on a nickel-containing catalyst, a gas which can substitute natural gas and has a methane content of more than 90% by volume, is obtainable.
