Abstract

The invention relates to a methanation process wherein a preheated synthesis gas stream consisting of hydrogen and carbon monoxide generally in the proportion 3:1 v/v is combined with a recycle stream from the methanation reactor and the combined stream is passed through a nickeliferous bed of methanation catalyst in a methanation reactor. The economy of such process is improved by reducing the recycle ratio; and to obtain this the temperature of the combined inlet stream according to the invention is maintained between 175 and 250 DEG C. Under normal circumstances low temperatures would destroy the nickel catalyst and to avoid this the invention prescribes that a layer of shift catalyst is placed in the methanation reactor, directly ahead of the nickeliferous methanation catalyst. <IMAGE>
