Abstract
Synthesis gas containing mainly H 2 and CO, with some CH 4 and C0 2 , is made by a two-stage catalytic cracking with steam of a hydrocarbon feedstock. The first stage, which produces a CH 4 -rich gas, is carried out in an unheated reactor at 350 to 550 C., and the second at 400 to 900 C. in an externally heated tubular reactor. Both stages employ Ni and/or Co catalysts. The internal surface area of the Ni or Co in the first catalyst is more than 20 sq.m./gram, preferably 30 to 300 sq.m/ gram, and the carrier is a precipitated oxide and/or silicate of Mg, Ca, Ba, Zn, Al and/or Ti. The catalyst at the inlet to the second stage contains a hydraulic binder, e.g. calcium aluminate, and the catalyst at the outlet to that stage may be the same as the first-stage catalyst. Feedstocks having 2 to 30 C atoms per molecule may be cracked, especially those having a B.R. of 30 to 200 C. The reactants are preheated, and if methanol synthesis gas is required, C0 2 may be added to the steam. Gas from the first reactor may be heated by heat exchange with flue gases from the second reactor, and the throughput of the first reactor is at least 2 kg of hydrocarbon per litre of catalyst per hour.
