Abstract
1,213,425. Fuel elements. KERNFORSCHUNGSANLAGE JULICH G.m.b.H. 6 March, 1969 [12 March, 1968], No. 11881/69. Heading G6C. A fuel and/or breeding element comprises a zirconium alloy can loosely filled with fuel and/ or breeding material particles having one or more thin coatings of metallic materials. The coatings may be applied to a coating of pyrolytic graphite enveloping the fuel and/or breeding material particles, and may comprise Zr, Sn, Si or Al, or any combination of these elements, applied preferably by evaporation. The diameter of the particles is from 20 to 500 Á, if they are initially uncoated, and from 150 to 1000 Á, if they are initially coated with pyrolytic graphite. A satisfactory thickness of the metallic coatings is between 1 and 10 Á. Should the element be used in a water-cooled reactor and the can have some slight defect, the metallic coatings prevent chemical reactions occuring in the interior of the element, which would lead to destruction of the element, and prevent contamination of the cooling water.
