Abstract
A fuel element for nuclear reactors comprises a body of fissile metal such as uranium with a coating of an alloy of the fissile metal with a strengthening material, the whole being enclosed in a fluid-tight can; the alloy has greater tensile strength than the fissile metal. The coating is formed by application of alloying metal as a foil or by spraying, electro-deposition or vapour deposition, followed by heating to cause diffusion into the fissile metal, or by heating the fissile metal in an atmosphere containing a compound of the alloying material. Preferred alloying materials are: Mo up to 15% by weight; Nb up to 10%; Zr up to 30%; C up to 4.8% and ternary alloys U-Nb-Mo or U-Nb-Zr.
