Abstract
Neutron-absorbing parts for nuclear reactors, such as control-rods and shielding, consist of unalloyed or slightly alloyed sintered iron or steel containing 2 to 15% by weight of neutron absorber and have a corrosion resisting coating; the density of the product is at least 7 gm./c.c. Preferably a powdered mixture of absorber and steel or iron is sintered at a temperature between 1260 DEG and 1300 DEG C. inside a stainless steel casing and the product is hot-formed. Absorbers mentioned are boron-carbide, cadmium fluoride and oxides of Sm, Gd or Eu. A composite mould may be used whose interior has the same compositions as the iron or steel powder. The Specification also refers to absorbers dispersed in stainless steel, Zr and Ti.
